When Magic Goes Wrong (But Actually Goes Right)

Transform your “Mistakes” into magical triumphs with this mind-bending four-King production. 👑

I’ve just published the latest edition of Easy Does It in Marty’s Magic Ruseletter, my email newsletter written for amateur magicians—professionals can read it as well, of course! Easy Does It, as the name suggests, is a regular column that focuses on very easy or self-working magic tricks. This time, I’m sharing something truly special: a revolutionary approach to magic that turns your apparent failures into your greatest successes. Yes, it’s another card trick!

What Makes “Perverse Magic” So Powerful?

Forget everything you know about the all-powerful magician persona. What if your biggest magical “failures” became your most memorable triumphs? “Pipo’s Perverse Production” introduces you to the fascinating world of perverse magic—a performance style where the magician appears surprised, confused, or even frustrated by the magical events unfolding around them.

This isn’t merely a gimmick; it represents a complete paradigm shift that breaks down barriers between you and your audience. It encourages genuine emotional investment, as spectators empathise with your perceived struggles and frustrations. Additionally, it delivers a powerful surprise when unexpected things happen, all while providing strong misdirection for your actual secret methods.

Here’s what your audience experiences:

You spread the cards and have someone select one—let’s say the Ten of Hearts. You confidently announce you’ll find the other three Tens using your “astounding magical abilities.”

But then everything goes wrong...

You try to produce two Tens at once but accidentally get two black Kings instead. Frustrated, you attempt a magical gesture to make a Ten appear face-up in the deck—but it’s another King!

Finally, giving up on the Tens, you try to find the fourth King. Instead, you produce the spectator’s original Ten of Hearts. When you turn over the card that’s been on the table all along, it’s the missing King!

Despite all your apparent blunders, you’ve successfully produced all four Kings AND found their selected card even though it was never lost in the first place!

The Genius Behind the Method

Difficulty: ⭐⭐ (Basic sleight of hand, false shuffle, double undercut, etc)
Performance Time: ⏱️⏱️ (3-4 minutes of pure entertainment)
Setup: 🎯 (Minimal pre-arrangement, easily pocketed)

When using only regular cards, the force used in the trick (an impromptu handling of Henry Christ’s famous 202nd Force) leaves a single card face up in the middle of the face-down deck. Rather than hiding this card or secretly righting it, we utilise it to produce one of the four Kings. The clever construction of the piece means most of the work is done during the initial forcing procedure, leaving you free to focus on what matters most—the perverse presentation that sells the effect.

The Historical Context

This performance style isn’t new—it dates back to the 1920s when Australian magician Charles Waller pioneered “perverse magic” as a radical departure from the pompous, all-powerful magician persona (he also coined the term in his book Up His Sleeve). The approach was later developed by Gerald Deutsch, who spent more than 16 years exploring its principles, posting his ideas on the Genii Magazine Forum.

The five core elements that make perverse magic so effective:

  1. Reversal of Control - You become the victim of rebellious props.
  2. Objects with Agency - The cards develop their own mischievous personality.
  3. Audience Complicity - Spectators become witnesses to the conspiracy.
  4. Comedy through Frustration - Your mounting exasperation becomes entertainment.
  5. Enhanced Misdirection - Perfect cover for your hidden methods.

Why This Approach Works

Traditional magic creates distance—you’re the wizard, they’re mere mortals. Perverse magic makes you relatable, human, and vulnerable. When the impossible resolution comes, it’s even more astonishing because neither you nor the audience saw it coming.

The emotional journey—sympathy, amusement, and genuine astonishment—makes the magic more memorable than any “perfect” performance where you maintain complete control over the magic.

Perfect for Every Performer

Whether you’re:

  • A beginner learning fundamental sleights, like false shuffles and false cuts
  • An intermediate performer wanting to explore new presentation styles
  • An experienced magician seeking fresh approaches to classic methods
  • Anyone who wants to create deeper connections with their audience

This routine offers something valuable. It’s also an excellent opener that produces four Kings you can use for your next effect!
