Shhh, It's a Secret!

The Disclaimer is offering a free secret issue to all new subscribers. Read this short article to learn more.

The Disclaimer, a monthly digital magazine by Tom Dobrowolski and friends, is offering a free secret issue to anyone who subscribes before May 15th. As a gold-level supporter since its inception, I’ve been consistently impressed by the quality and originality of the material shared in this unconventional magical periodical.

If you decide to join because of my recommendation, email chicagomagicbash@gmail.com and mention my name (Marty Jacobs). By doing this, you’ll receive the exclusive secret issue of the magazine containing three tricks; two routines by Jeremiah Zuo, a killer coin trick by Curtis Kam (see video performance below), and a card trick that’s a bona fide magician fooler by Albert Chou.

The Disclaimer isn’t your typical magic magazine. Imagine if Genii fell into a puddle of toxic ooze—the same type that mutated those four famous turtles (who later became weapon-wielding, crime-fighting teenage ninjas). The result would be The Disclaimer! The crew behind this publication has an irreverent and oddball sense of humour, coupled with a deep love for comic art and satire (just take a look at their hilarious posts on Ko-Fi).

The creative minds behind The Disclaimer are:

  • Danny Cheng
  • Luiz De Castro
  • Tom Dobrowolski
  • Michael “Kekoa” Erickson
  • Richard Hucko
  • Curtis Kam
  • David Kuraya
  • Craig Ouesterling
  • William Wheeler
  • Jeremiah Zuo
Jeremiah Zuo is also the illustrator for the magazine and does most of the hard work to pull everything together to make a coherent issue each month.

Do you prefer physical magic magazines and books? Don’t worry, The Disclaimer has you covered! The team produces a hardcover anthology every year, collecting all the monthly issues into one bound volume. This year-end book usually contains exclusive “bonus items” unavailable elsewhere. You must be a Gold or Silver member to guarantee receiving this book. It’s worth noting that The Disclaimer team doesn’t sell back issues or make them available after publication (except in the year-end book). The only way to get an issue you missed is to purchase the annual anthology.

The Disclaimer is distributed via the Ko-Fi web platform, which I also use for receiving donations for this blog and my Ruseletter. Issues appear in supporter-only blog posts on The Disclaimer’s Ko-Fi page, and subscribers receive email notifications when new issues are released.

While a Ko-Fi account isn’t strictly necessary, registering makes it easier to manage your subscription. You can also directly message The Disclaimer crew within Ko-Fi for support. I’ve done this a couple of times—once to download a missed issue and another time to resolve a payment error. I received top-notch customer service both times. The Ko-Fi platform also makes managing monthly payments a breeze, accepting PayPal as well as major credit cards.

By subscribing, you’ll gain access to The Disclaimer’s unique and satirical content and receive the free secret issue as a bonus. Any content on the site, or in The Disclaimer, marked with double asterisks (**) is satire, by the way. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to explore The Disclaimer’s unconventional world and expand your magical horizons.

Why are You Recommending The Disclaimer?

As an added incentive, if I manage to get someone to subscribe due to my recommendation, I’ll also receive a copy of the exclusive free secret issue—a perk that even current subscribers won’t get! To be clear, I receive no financial compensation for recommending The Disclaimer. After being a happy reader for over three years, I’m simply eager to see more magicians discover this underground publication and help it thrive (and I also really want that secret issue if I’m being honest).

Running an independent magic periodical is an uphill battle—a labour of love that rarely translates into substantial profits (if any). We currently face a concerning lack of diversity in the magic publishing landscape. Iconic magazines like MAGIC Magazine have long given up the ghost, while other newcomers, like Penguin Magic Monthly, have disappeared without a trace.

While established publications such as Genii Magazine, Magicseen, VANISH, and The Hermit still persist (and also deserve our support), the sheer number of magic periodicals has dwindled dramatically over the years. Once numbering in the hundreds, they’ve become an endangered species in our community!

In this climate, supporting independent voices like The Disclaimer, who dare to be different and offer fresh and unconventional perspectives, is critical to the health of the global magic community. By joining, you’ll not only gain access to their unique and satirical content but also contribute to the survival of this one-of-a-kind magic magazine.

Let’s ensure that trailblazers like The Disclaimer continue to thrive and bring much-needed diversity to our beloved art form. Join me in supporting their efforts and embracing the vibrant, multifaceted world of magic in all its glory! Have I convinced you to subscribe yet? 😉

Worldwide Pants by Curtis Kam 👖

Well, if you need any more motivation to support The Disclaimer, look no further than this video demo of “Worldwide Pants” by Curtis Cam. This offbeat coin trick is typical of the genius of The Wizard of Waikiki! I’m also happy to admit that this trick has me stumped. It’s a real magician fooler!

The only way to learn this incredible coin trick is by reading the secret issue of The Disclaimer. If that’s not incentive enough, I don’t know what is!
